Last night, Real Madrid was crowned third best club of the year. A decision that was not at all understood within the Iberian club and in Spain.
A golden week. For Real Madrid, the good news has come one after another in recent days. Despite a 1-1 draw against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League, Madrid have already qualified for the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League. On Sunday, they continued their good form by winning the Clasico against Barcelona (3-1). Last night, the Santiago Bernabeu stadium was the scene of a great moment as Karim Benzema was awarded the Ballon d’Or and Thibaut Courtois won the Yashin Trophy.
Real Madrid ahead of the game
A perfect night for the Merengues. Or almost. Real Madrid only finished in third place in the election for the best club of the year. Manchester City, who had more representatives in the final Ballon d’Or list, were crowned ahead of Liverpool. This has caused some indignation in Spain, where it is not understood how two teams that were beaten by Madrid in the Champions League last year finish ahead of them. As a reminder, Real Madrid eliminated the Skyblues in the semi-final and beat the Reds in the final.
Despite this, Casa Blanca, who triumphed in the Champions League and La Liga, finished third. A scandal for Spain. “Madrid underestimated”, wrote AS on Tuesday before adding: “France Football has invented a new award that was not voted for by journalists: ‘best club’. Madrid, in the year of the Decimocuarta, finished third (…) What was described as a “minor award” caused the greatest commotion. For the stupefaction at Real Madrid is total and absolute. The verdict left no one indifferent. The “best club”, not a team, of the 2021-22 season is… Manchester City!”
Spain does not understand
On the set of El Chiringuito, Guti did not understand: “I have not believed in this type of award for a long time”. A journalist on the set said: “Congratulations to City but they haven’t shown on the pitch that they are better than Madrid. Iker Casillas called it a “joke award”. Real Madrid also reacted on social media with a photo of the Madrid players celebrating their 3-1 win over Man City with just an emoji showing eyes looking at the shot. Toni Kroos also spoke out on Twitter.
The German posted the following message: “Congratulations also to Real Madrid for being the third best team in 2021/2022”. And then he added ironically: “third best team in 2021/22, happy, Real Madrid? On Cadena SER, Karim Benzema said: “They can give the trophy for the best club to whoever they want, but the best in the world is Madrid. When asked about the subject, Florentino Pérez was also a good sport. We congratulate them, they have a great president, a great coach and good players. It’s a great club. Bigger than Real Madrid in 2022 according to yesterday’s ranking.
